If you have time, try to do the following: you need only a computer screen that is easy to rotate of 90°, and you need to have a mouse (does not work with a touchpad).

So, put your mouse on the lower part of the screen, then rotate the screen, and

1) try to move the mouse in order to reach some point on the screen (e.g. the button to minimize this window).

The sensation you prove the first time is awkward, since if you move the mouse horizontally, the arrow on the screen will move vertically, completely disorienting you.

2) Now, try to reach the same point in the following way:
just move the mouse "shaking your hand slightly", while keeping concentrated the mouse and on moving the mouse towards that point.

You should notice that in this case the shaking motion gradually moves you to the wanted point, with much less effort than when you tried directly.

I guess the mechanism explaining this is behavior is like follows: when you want to touch some precise point with your finger, the brain has some system to detect if your hand reaches the target in a subconscious way, computing the tiny deviations needed to reach it exactly. This probably is a process of "trial and error", i.e. the brain favours the movements that tend to the target.
Now, by shaking your hand, you eliminate the conscious part of your movement, and let free the inconscious error-minimizing corrections "do the work for you".

QUESTION: Does that make any sense? :)

1. I want to speak in this post about notion of "equivalence" between objects, and describe some paradoxes to which it can lead when combined to the notion of "decomposition".

The points a. and b. below are definitions. Point c. states the main problem we will consider.

a. When speaking of "equivalence", we always are in presence of an operation of objects in our universe to the from couples of objects to the truth values (we assume that they are just "true" and "false"): we take 2 objects, say A and B, and the "operation" gives as a result the truth value of the sentence
"A is equivalent to B".

The following basic properties will be (safely) assumed from now on:
- for any object A, "A is equivalent to A"=true
- if A, B are objects and if "A is equivalent to B"=true, then "B is equivalent to A"=true
- if A,B,C are objects and if "A is equivalent to B"=true, and "B is equivalent to C"=true, then "A is equivalent to C"=true

b. When we want to speak of a "decomposition" of an object, we are in presence of :
- a concept of "being a part of"
- a first object A, to which we associate a family F containing some objects B,C,..

The properties required for the family F are:
- A contains as a part of it each one of the elements of the family F
- there is no part of A which is not contained in some element of F (i.e. each object O which is a part of A is also part of some element of F)
- the elements of F are all disjoint (i.e. if we take an object B in F, then there does not exist a part of B which is also part of another object of F)

c. We want now to consider the interplay between decomposition and equivalence. Suppose that the following are true:
- F is a decomposition of A
- F' is a decomposition of A'
- each element of F is equivalent to an element of F'
In other words one breaks A and A' into pieces and observes that the pieces are all equivalent!

Question: Is it true that in such case A is equivalent to A'?
Answer: If you ever played with Lego, you know that this is certainly not the case.
Conclusion: One must introduce the concept of mutual position, at least.

Therefore we will also assume that
- there is a good definition of "relative position" for a family of objects
- the objects forming F are in the same relative position as the ones equivalent to them forming F' (i.e. you positioned the LEGO pieces in the same way as their equivalents)

Question: Is it true NOW that A is equivalent to A'?
Answer: Not yet. One has to be careful with the notion of "part".

This is explained very well through the following example

The Banach–Tarski paradox is a theorem in set theoretic geometry which states that a solid ball in 3-dimensional space can be split into several non-overlapping pieces, which can then be put back together in a different way to yield two identical copies of the original ball. The reassembly process involves only moving the pieces around and rotating them, without changing their shape. Actually the pieces building up the two copies, are also all equal (up to rotation and translation) and they are in the same mutual position!

However they are of a quite complicated shape, in the following sense: From geometry you know the volume of the easily constructable figures (cube, parallelipiped, sphere..). To further extend such notion to other objects, the best way is to state some properties that you want to hold for it, and then look at the greatest class of objects
- which contains the "easy" figures you started with
- on which there is an extension of the "volume" ("volume"=assignment of a number to each figure, such that the wanted properties continue to hold).

The properties for the volume which one wants are basically:
- the volume of a (possibly infinite) union of objects which are each disjoint of the others, is the sum of the volumes of the single elements osf such union
- the volume of an object A is the same as the volume of A' if A' is obtained from A by translation and/or rotation

Then there are so many different shapes in the 3D space, that the "volume" cannot be extended to all subsets of the space. The sets in which the two spheres above are divided are so complicated that a "volume" defined on the sphere cannot be "extended to them".

Conclusion: The definition of "part" should be restricted, otherwise we arrive at apparently contraddictory results.

In everyday life things are getting even more complicated (That's because we usually don't think too much about the concept of "equivalence", until somebody points out that it generates a paradox.) :

2. Theseus is remembered in Greek mythology as the slayer of the Minotaur. The ship in which he returned from Knossos was not in good condition, after all the time Theseus passed in the labyrinth.

As parts of the ship needed repair, it was rebuilt plank by plank. Suppose that, eventually, every plank was replaced; would it still have been the same ship?

Changing a single plank can never turn one ship into another. Even when every plank had been replaced, then, and no part of the original ship remained, it would still have been Theseus’ ship.

Suppose, though, that each of the planks removed from Theseus’ ship was restored, and that these planks were then recombined to once again form a ship. Would this have been Theseus’ ship? Again, the answer is yes: this ship would have had precisely the same parts as Theseus’ ship, arranged in precisely the same way.

If this happened, then, then it would seem that Theseus had returned from Knossos in two ships.

Question: What means "being equivalent to Theseus' ship"?

3. Another example: Also our cells are continuously regenerated. The atoms of which we are made are never the same, still we feel like we have always the same identity. This however causes no paradox, just because nobody can take our dead tissues, "restore them", and make other copies of ourselves.

chinese cuisine and biological fractals

Every mathematician knows that snowflakes are a kind of fractal (here there is a well-known snowflake-like fractal), but not so many of them know that also living creatures give rise to snowflake fractals.

Indeed, reaction-diffusion equations give rise to fractals through their bifurcations. The most famous of those fractals are the ones given by bacterial colony growth: see also this beautiful gallery (ok, the colours are artificial, but they do look very nice also in black and white).

This is how they are made, basically: take a Petri-dish, put in its center a point-like colony of bacteria, and let it evolve. The colony will split, and the "daughters" will create some bifurcating paths through the petri dish, giving rise to a snowflake-like pattern.

Before today I would think these snowflakes are, however, quite artificial (where do you find a point-like colony of bacteria put in a "sterile" medium like a Petri dish, in nature??) .. however here is an example!!!

It is a chinese food ( the "century egg") made of an egg, which is put in a clay coat for a long period. Bacteria penetrate through some pores of the egg crust, and form exactly the snowflake patterns seen in a lab.. very amazing!

experiments about honey crystallization

I just found out that fructose when heated up becomes the stable form, glucose.. now honey contains: 20% water, 40% glucose and 40% fructose (of course these values depend of the honey type). It turns out that fructose is more soluble than glucose so we expect the crystals on the bottom of the honey glass to be glucose.

Then I propose two experiments to prove that:
1) Take honeys which contain more glucose than others: do they crystallize sooner and faster?
2) It is known that glucose is more stable than fructose: therefore if you take honey, heat it (according to this, the temperature of a hot coffee, say 60 Celsius degrees, should suffice.. ) and let it cool down, probably the molecules of fructose will become glucose, so we expect much higher crystallization rate after heating!

sugar and rabbits

Trying to figure it out I found out this nice website, full of many scientific explanations about the sugar in our alimentation (since obesity comes mainly from sugar excess in the diet, and on the other hand, the brain needs a lot of energy, available easily through sugar, one may be interested to find some equilibrium between mental lucidity and fatness..)

Ok enough introductions.. I will comment here the first article that I read from that website.

SUMMARY:

It deals about what the body does, when no sugar is available. In this case there are only two main energy sources: fat and proteins. The article makes a very interesting observation, which leads to fat as the best substitute:
-proteins are tranbsformable in energy only through the liver
-the reactions needed for that require oxygen
-the liver does recieve most of its oxygen through the portal vein, which has a low concentration of oxygen

based on the above considerations, one can make a quantitative prediction of the energy producable by the liver through protein burning: about 1600 kcal.

What about fat? this can be transformed in energy directly in the cells, no need of the liver for that. Therefore there is no limitation on the energy producable through that process. Easy, isn't it?

Then why did I speak about rabbits in the title? ..that's because of a nice example given there, about this population eating only rabbits.. animals with little fat and a lot of proteins in their meat!! People were eating a lot of rabbits, but still they were hungry! Of course they did not starve (does that confirm the 1600 Kcal estimate?), but that phenomenon was called "rabbit starving".
On the other side, there are other populations eating a lot of fat ("saturated" fat is more energetic, it seems..[this will be discussed elsewhere])..and they had no problems. QED

nazis, runes and Che Guevara

I discovered an interesting fact today.. I was looking up the wikipedia page about runes.. near the end of that loong article, there was a section about the use of a runic alphabet in nazist Germany ..of course everybody knows that the Swastika is a symbol used by northern people to represent the sun; but I didn't know that the symbol of SS is also composed of 2 runes.. actually that runes are the SIG RUNES, similar to our current "S" and called the "sig" rune. This rune had also (like all runes) a magical meaning: it was the rune of Victory.

And here comes the point of this post. "Sieg heil" is the well-known nazi greeting, used by the propaganda of the time as one of its slogans.. and that actually means "hail victory"-- The same as "hasta la victoria"!!! very strange, huh?

gauge e simboli ellittici

(nota: chiaramente la filosofia di questo blog, che era quella di evitare la matematica, è stata da molto superata)

[questa è una bozza. sto cercando di ricordare un seminario che ho seguito oggi pomeriggio, e alcune idee che mi erano venute a riguardo. quindi potrei fare errori anche ragguardevoli]

Si può definire il simbolo principale di un operatore differenziale ellittico su un fibrato. Il fibrato deve avere come base il cotangente di una varietà compatta. Che l'operatore sia ellittico si traduce nel fatto che il simbolo principale sia invertibile (e mandi fibre in fibre) fuori dalla sezione zero. Chiaramente allora il simbolo principale sarà (localmente) una somma di derivazioni (dello stesso ordine), a coefficienti nel gruppo degli automorfismi della fibra. Si può vedere il fibrato coe un fibrato associato a tale gruppo, e allora gli automorfismi (che variano in modo regolare da punto a punto) danno un cambio di gauge. Ecco quindi che in un certo senso:

1) essendo le derivazioni di ordine 1 identificabili con le 1-forme differenziali, le connessioni del fibrato sono operatori differenziali. Il fatto di essere "orizzontali" si potrebbe quindi generalizzare agli operatori, richiedendo magari che solo le derivazioni orizzontali possano partecipare alla somma..

2) si possono definire operatori differenziali ellittici (o per lo meno i loro simboli principali) relativi a qualsiasi algebra di Lie (il cui gruppo andrebbe a sostituire il nostro gruppo lineare), che quindi generalizzano quelli usuali allo stesso modo in cui le connessioni su fibrati generali generalizzano le forme differenziali. Qui diventa importante l'ellitticità.

3) tutta l'analogia si ha lontano dalla sezione sopra lo zero (nel cotangente che fa da base al fibrato). Quest'ultima viene azzerata infatti dal simbolo principale. Il teorema dell'indice di Atyiah-Singer descrive un collegamento fra due modi di descrivere tale degenerazione dei fibrati. Probabilmente anche questo teorema si generalizza al caso di fibrati con gruppo generale. [imparare la K-teoria, e vedere la dimostrazione del teorema dell'indice è il prossimo passo da fare]

Una volta, circa un secolo fa, è venuta fuori questa congettura, la pongo sotto forma di domanda:

Sarà vero che le varietà, se compatte, semplicemente connesse, senza bordo, sono sfere?

La domanda è dal punto di vista dei topologi, cioè si considerano "uguali" due spazi omeomorfi. Per la dimensione 2 la cosa è piuttosto chiara, visto che le varietà sono classificate tutte quante, in base al genere (la cosa risale proprio a Poincarè). Per le dimensioni grandi, si usano fatti topologici, e la risposta è sempre sì, con un procedimento simile per tutte le dimensioni.. ma non so come si fa.

Perciò la gente dopo un po' ha iniziato a concentrarsi sul caso delle varietà 3-dimensionali.

A questo punto (o anche prima, appena letta la domanda) uno pensa di fare un controesempio, ma non ci si riesce.. o si costruisce una cosa col bordo (la "palla chiusa" di R^3), o non compatta (la "palla aperta", o S^2 x R), insomma quasi quasi uno inizia a pensare che la risposta sia "sì" anche in dimensione 3. Poincarè anche lui lo pensava, ma non voleva approfondire la cosa, essendo secondo lui troppo profonda come domanda. Dopo un po' è apparso Gregori Perelman, che ha pubblicato due preprint: li potete consultare in rete, accessibili gratuitamente.

Dopo un po' qualcuno si dev'essere convinto che fossero giusti, infatti hanno proposto a Perelman un premio di un milione di dollari e la medaglia Fields, ma lui ha rifiutato..beh questa però è un'altra storia.

Il lavoro di Perelman

In realtà Perelman nel suo secondo articolo ha dimostrato (almeno reso chiaro che seguendo la sua strategia si dimostra) la congettura di Thurston, che più o meno classifica (il "più o meno" viene dal fatto che "classificare" è un concetto un po' vago) tutte le varietà compatte di dimensione 3 (nel senso che dà delle strutture canoniche da metterci sopra). L'enunciato è spiegato abbastanza chiaramente qui:

Ora passiamo alla tecnica di Perelman. Lui, copiando un po' Hamilton, ha pensato bene di usare il fatto che su tutte le varietà c'è una struttura metrica (fatto classico, non è qui la parte brillante della dim.)... poi se si fa evolvere questa metrica in modo inversamente proporzionale alla curvatura, si ottiene che le parti a curvatura positiva diventano meno curve, e le parti a curvatura negativa anche loro tendono a diventare meno curve (la curvatura si avvicina a zero). Quindi uno penserebbe che al limite si ottiene una cosa a curvatura costante... tipo la sfera!

Fin qui tutto bene, più che altro perché l'idea è così vaga che non si riescono nemmeno a trovare le difficoltà. Il primo articolo di Perelman studia l'equazione che sembra la più naturale, , cioè la metrica che varia nel "tempo" proporzionalmente al tensore di Ricci, e (primo fatto chiave) lo vede come flusso gradiente di un funzionale. Scrive cioè un funzionale (sull'insieme delle metriche, sulla mia varietà), tale che, se mi dirigo sempre dalla parte opposta al suo gradiente, con velocità data dal gradiente, allora sto dseguando il flusso di Ricci.

Nascono così delle orbite periodiche, cioè metriche che evolvono in modo periodico: le hanno chiamate Solitoni. Poi usando queste soluzioni come modello, si inizia a capire meglio l'equazione, che un po' somiglia a una dissipazione della curvatura, come se (la curvatura) fosse del calore, o un gas..

E si iniziano a capire i fenomeni che succedono quando la funzione (la metrica della varietà) diventa infinito: le Singolarità. Può quindi darsi che in certi punti della varietà ci siano pezzetti tali che se li lascio evolvere, allora loro diventano "lunghissimi" (la metrica scoppia). Perelman fa vedere che questi punti sono ben discosti l'uno dall'altro, e ce ne sono pochi (non si addensano in spazio e tempo, se non in modi che si sanno trattare).

L'altro fatto chiaro a tutti, è che normalmente queste singolarità avvengono, e si costruiscono anche facilmente! (vedere il libro di Peter Topping "Lecture notes on the Ricci Flow", sul suo sito, con tanto di disegni! fra l'altro é un libro fighissimo, che contiene tutto quello che uno vorrebbe sapere per iniziare.. http://www.warwick.ac.uk/~maseq/topping_RF_mar06.pdf ). Dunque, se voglio dimostrare che tutte le varietà evolvono nella sfera, non posso certo iniziare col dire "supponiamo la mia varietà sia del tipo buono".. il fatto è che le varietà evolvono facendosi crescere colli di bottiglia infiniti, o sfere che si schiacciano diventando sempre più piccole.. quindi all'equilibrio (dopo che il tutto evolve per tempo infinito) non c'è una sola cosa canonica a cui si arriva.

Ora spunta una nuova idea, che sta nel primo, ma soprattutto nel secondo articolo di Perelman: tagliare la varietà vicino a dove si sta per formare la singolarità, far evolvere la parte "buona", fino a che si capisce per bene la sua topologia (e nvece congelando il tempo nei pezzettini "problematici", per evitare singolarità), e poi riincollare. C'è quindi una discussione del modo in cui la nuova varietà (con le curvature fatte per benino, tranne vicino a qualche punto) viene fuori alla fine, che non conosco però troppo.

Altre idee interessanti che vengono fuori, si hanno guardando i solitoni, cioè le soluzioni dell'equazione del flusso di ricci tali che la metrica a tutti i tempi mi dia una varietà diffeomorfa a quella iniziale: in pratica la metrica non fa niente di cattivo alle topologie. Un modo per ottenere delle metriche di questo tipo su $R n$ (dove l'equazione del flusso di Ricci diventa quella del calore) è prendere la tipica gaussiana, che si appiattisce sempre di più. Nel caso delle varietà, si possono anche trovare metriche che "contengono come ingredienti" dei gradienti funzioni, e grosso modo corrispondono a guardare una soluzione "canonica" mentre ci si sposta lungo questo gradiente. Ora, in modo del tutto sorprendente, Perelman interpreta le funzioni sulla varietà come le "particelle di un gas", cioè nell'ambito della meccanica statistica: in tal modo il ruolo della "temperatura" verrà giocato dalla "t", il parametro lungo il quale la varietà evolve, e, scrivendo quello che i fisici chiamano "distribuzione di Maxwell-Boltzman", si ha l'analogo del concetto di entropia (cioè di una quantità che decresce lungo il flusso), che in questo caso viene ad essere l'idea chiave per la creazione del funzionale "decisivo" di Perelman.

Un'altra idea, che viene fuori dall'uso della meccanica statistica, è quella di immergere il nostro sistema statistico in un "termostato" cioè considerarlo all'interno di un sistema più grande, la cui temperatura ed entropia non variano. Tutto il flusso di calore nel nostro sistema iniziale si traduce qui in scambio di calore con il resto del termostato (l'ambiente). Siccome nell'analogia di Perelman "temperatura"viene tradotto da "tempo lungo il quale la metrica evolve", "termostato" verrà tradotto da "varietà più grande", in particolare caratterizzata dal contenere "il grafico" dell'evoluzione spaziotemporale precedente. Cioè il tempo è un parametro nella varietà più grande (che quindi avrà anche dimensione più grande). Inoltre, come un "termostato" è per definizione "all'equilibrio con l'esterno", così la varietà ausiliaria di Perelman è a curvatura di Ricci nulla. Dal considerare le implicazioni di questo fatto, nasce una particolare "distanza spaziotemporale" per la nostra "varietà spaziotemporale" (ottenuta considerando come coordinata anche il tempo), simile alla distanza data dalla metrica di Minkowski in Relatività, tranne per il fatto di dipendere in modo nonlineare (dipendente dalla curvatura spaziale) dalla componente temporale. Questo strumento tecnico è molto utile per descrivere il comportamento del flusso di Ricci all'avvicinarsi delle singolarità, e per descrivere le condizioni che garantiscono che le singolarità siano "poche, e ben trattabili" (con riscalamenti parabolici).

Per il futuro

C'è anche la possibilità che ci sia un legame piuttosto profondo fra Relatività Generale (i lavori di S. Hawking, ovvio*!) e Flusso di Ricci, ma sembra non esserci nessuno abbastanza addentro in entrambe le cose. Lo stesso anche per l'ovvio* legame con la Teoria delle Stringhe, in cui l'entropia vista da Perelman nel senso della Meccanica Statistica potrebbe, dicono, essere vista come l'energia di una certa particella (..col segno meno: e quindi di nuovo sarebbe ovvio* il fatto che sia una quantità crescente), e usando questo legame, si potrebbero reinterpretare tutti i fatti di una delle teorie in funzione dell'altra.

Perche' rifare una canzone cambiando stile, magari con strumentio diversi, e' normale, e invece le poesie si fanno imparare a memoria, e nessuno pensa mai di cambiarle per farle suonare meglio? ...sembra che l'idea di fondo sia quasi che ogni poesia e' perfetta: ma come si fa a dire che a quello che l'ha scritta non e' per caso sfuggito qualche modo di esprimersi al meglio, che magari a qualcun altro sarebbe subito venuto in mente?

l'idea di metafora ed un certo suo tipo di estensione

Alcuni paragrafi sono più comprensibili da un pubblico matematico, o che ama la matematica. Li indico con un asterisco.

Le argomentazioni fornite sono provviste di numerosi buchi, e sono facili da confutare. Questo perchè non voglio passare il mio tempo a scrivere e a riflettere sul modo migliore di dire le cose che penso, bensì ad esplicitarle e basta.

I)
In cosa sta la bellezza di una metafora? ..è chiaro che la verità sarebbe "non ne ho idea".. non per questo è quello che dirò qui (e la filosofia che sta dietro a questo modo di procedere verrà esplicitata magari in un post successivo).. quello che dirò sarà invece che la sua bellezza sta nelle connessioni inaspettate fra argomenti diversi. L'uomo è fatto per cercare parallelismi, e più questi si prolungano, più l'osservatore si esalta, e la sua mente entra in frizzante euforia.

D'altro canto la scrittura è un modo lineare di esprimere il linguaggio, e allo stesso modo anche l'attenzione di un individuo si focalizza di norma su un solo evento alla volta. Da questo nasce la difficoltà di fare delle belle metafore, e la loro a volte necessaria cortezza.
In poesia spesso ci si rifugia nella impressività delle parole/immagini usate per sopperire a questo: il lettore viene colpito e non capendo cosa gli succede si sofferma, e torna sulle parole che legge o sente, e in questo modo prolunga le due corte metà della metafora nel tempo, rendendo così più forte il parallelismo.. a volte la cosa è tanto sottile che sembra avvenire qualcosa di magico, molto più di un parallelismo.

Un altro di questi "sotterfugi" usati per superare il lato lineare della communicazione è quello di non esplicitare uno dei lati della metafora. "E come si può capire il tutto?" chiederete voi.. beh è molto semplice: ci si basa sul fatto che l'altro lato è insito nel lettore. E' qui la bellezza di alcuni testi specifici, rivolti a un particolare pubblico, o a un pubblico con un determinato bagagli culturale.
Per esempio molti comici sembrano addirittura geniali, e mettono in fermento la nostra mente dicendo certe cose che entrano in correlazone con fatti che noi già sappiamo: nel farlo ci guidano, facendoci aderire con la nostra coscienza al calco delle loro battute, e più questo incollamento è preciso ed esteso, più ci esaltano le loro battute.

Uno dei miei tipi di "metafora" preferiti è quello di tipo matematico: spesso una certa formula in una branca della matematica fa scoprire tutto un altro senso per un'altra branca della matematica: per esempio l'idea del gruppo fondamentale di una varietà, o quella di grafo di Cayley associato a un gruppo iperbolico (o in generale la maggior parte della teoria dei gruppi iperbolci ° la Gromov), i teoremi dell'indice, la struttura geometrica di Otto sullo spazio delle misure di probabilità con la metrica di Wasserstein, il parallelismo fra ideali e numeri razionali; ogni tentativo di nascondere la bellezza di questi parallelismi formalizzandoli suona come una blasfemia, anche se spesso è utile.
Da dove sorge questo tipo di metafora?

Il fatto è che la matematica contiene il prototipo di ogni metafora, e in un certo senso ne coglie l'essenza: nessun discorso matematico è mai più che una succesione di frasi sconnesse per un non esperto, o per un esperto che non vuole capirlo. Quello che l'estetica matematica comune cerca, è cogliere l'armonia delle cose, e creare cose che completino le armonie già esistenti.
In questo senso, la matematica generalizza l'idea di metafora, e la espande cercando di allontanare il più possibile i fatti contingenti insiti nella metafora letteraria.

VI)
E il prezzo che la matematica paga per questa sua ricerca di purezza ed astrazione è il fatto di rendersi incomprensibile, o al massimo comprensibile solo dopo attenti studi e dopo aver accettato un linguaggio del tutto innaturale e privo di riferimenti al mondo in cui, volendolo o no, si è costretti a vivere. Il matematico paga la sua ricerca di armonia e di esaltazione intellettuale con l'alienazione.

VII*)
La soluzione c'è, ed è contenuta nei punti V e III, anche se molto difficile (forse impossibile?) da raggiungere, tranne che sotto ipotesi molto particolari.
Non è una soluzione giusta cerare di esplicitare la matematica e di "svelarla al popolino" come molti professano di voler fare: infatti "il popolino" non è stupido, e non serve far finta che lo sia, nemmeno per un buon fine; inoltre svelare i meccanismi matematici "con la forza", anche se tale violenza è nascosta dietro un'iplicazione (se non capisci la matematica non capirai nemo la bellezza), è controproducente, e ha l'unico risultato di annullare l'immediatezza delle "metafore matematiche", e cioè uno dei loro punti chiave.

VIII)
La soluzione è usare il lato subconscio e la cultura già acquisita dall'individuo a cui ci si rivolge, ricchissima di smboli e correlazioni pronti ad essere "utilizzati", e unirli secondo una logica "di tipo matematico"; questo senza che l'interlocutore lo sappia, anzi, senza dargliene il minimo indizio.
Si tratterebbe insomma di tradurre l'armonia matematica in "simboli del mondo di tutti i giorni", un po come lo si fa (fermandosi però troppo prima del limite del possibile) in alcune pubblicità: bisogna chiaramente conoscere a fondo i meccanismi del subconscio dell'osservatore, e anche i modi di creare armonia nel senso matematico; bisogna studiare a fondo il modo in cui si può creare tale armonia, allo stesso modo in cui si cercano le connessioni fra fatti matematici diversi. In questo senso è quasi impossibile da attuare.
Tuttavia potrebbe giocare un ruolo importante il fatto di limitarsi a poche persone, la cui mente offre più "spunti di metafora": con queste "ipotesi ristrette" si potrebbe forse giungere abbastanza vicini ad una estensione più "naturale" della metafora matematica.

la mente quantistica

Forse il titolo è esagerato, e somiglia un po troppo ai titoli delle riviste idiote tipo focus e simili, lo ammetto. Ma ora vi spiego cosa significa.

Il tutto nasce dalle solite cose che si dicono della mente umana: è complessa e contraddittoria.. se non lo fosse allora nessuno riterrebbe interessante una poesia del tipo "Odi et amo" di Catullo, e molti cantanti e scrittori sarebbero morti di fame (poverini). Ma d'altra parte noi siamo sempre covinti che la nostra coscienza in realtà non cambia, e cioè, nonostante spesso una stessa persona esprima giudizi contraddittori, questo spesso non ci infastidisce, e siamo abituati comunque a continuare a ritenere che abbia "una sola coscienza". E questo era il primo ingrediente.

L'altra cosa che sto studiando un po di più adesso, è la meccanica quantistica (MQ). In pratica l'idea di fondo (banalizzando un po) è che a differenza della cosiddetta "meccanica classica", o "fisica classica", la MQ tiene conto del fatto che quando si effettua una misura su un "sistema fisico", lo si perturba, cambiando il suo "stato". Volendo dare una descrizione più astratta della faccenda, uno scopre che supporre questa perturbabilità dei sistemi fisici equivale a supporre che l'operazione "faccio la misura A" a volte non commuta con "fare la misura B". Il solito esempio è il seguente: se misuro la velocità di una particella e poi misuro la sua posizione, non è detto che ottanga la stessa cosa che se prima misuro la posizione e poi la velocità. Equesto era il secondo ingrediente.

Ora vi posso finalmente spiegare il titolo di questo post.
Quello che mi era venuto in mente è che i pensieri umani sono come gli stati di un sistema quantistico, ed essi sono osservabili (dagli altri come da sè stessi) attraverso descrizioni (a parole, o fatte attraverso immagini, o attraverso poesie, ecc ecc... poco importa il modo).
La mia ipotesi è che si possano modellizzare le descrizioni della mente (o forse solo quelle dei singoli pensieri) come degli operatori nel senso della MQ. Ciò sarebbe bellissimo, soprattutto a causa della seguente conseguenza.
Se riteniamo i nostri pensieri essere degli stati quantistici, e assumiamo che i vari "operatori di descrizione" non commutino, allora potremmo così giustificare e unificare la nostra coscienza, fatta di pensieri contraddittori, a di cui siamo comunque convinti. Il fatto che scatenerebbe le contraddizioni sarebbe in tal caso proprio il diverso ordine in cui ci soffermiamo sui nostri pensieri, il quale non è quindi, come intuitivamente potrebbe sembrare, del tutto ininfluente sui singoli pensieri, ma li "perturba" in senso quantistico (cioè li manda nei loro autostati, nel lessico più tipico della MQ).

Probabilmente il fatto soprastante potrebbe suonare meno incredibile tenendo conto del modo in cui funziona il cervello: i pensieri derivano dalla (non meglio definita) attivazione di certi circuiti neuronali; quando delle configurazioni neuronali precise si attivano in modo abbastanza marcato (contrapposto all'attivazione casuale tipo "rumore bianco"), i loro recettori per i neurotrasmettitori tendono a ricnfigurarsi, rafforzando quelle configurazioni (con un fenomeno che è ritenuto essere la base della memoria); quindi, se prima descriviamo (e ci concentriamo su) un pensiero in particolare, e, dopo averlo descritto, ci rivolgiamo ad un altro, potrebbe anche darsi che, dato che la configurazione del nostro cervello si è nel frattempo modificata, non la pensiamo più esattamente allo stesso modo di prima, nemmeno sul secondo argomento, sul quale quindi la nostra posizione si è (inconsciamente) modificata.
